Chart type · Comparison
Waffle
A 100-square grid split across up to six groups.
How to read it
One hundred squares, one percent each. Count squares. Each group fills in turn and the one the story is about arrives last; a before-and-after version flips the squares that changed hands.
Best for
Percentages you want read as counts of people or things rather than as an area.
When not to use it
The figure is not really out of a hundred, or there are more than about six groups.
The common mistake
Using it for a percentage of an abstract quantity. The grid implies countable things, so it works for people and fails for money.
